Vegetable plants

Vegetable plantsThe vegetable plants department numbers almost 80 members who are specialised in raising and multiplying plant reproduction material of vegetable crops. The billions of plants that they produce are destined for the production of vegetables for the consumer market. Some of these crops, such as tomatoes, sweet peppers and aubergines are cultivated in greenhouses, while other crops such as strawberries, asparagus and leeks are raised and multiplied outdoors. The principal destinations of these plants are the domestic market and countries in North West Europe.

An important focus of the department is improving co-operation within the chain. One of the aims is upgrading the exchange of information between suppliers and customers. This department also actively works towards creating forms of collaboration with organisations of professional horticultural nurseries in other European countries. This has resulted in EU Plant, a collaborative venture between a number of branch organisations and nurseries.

There are a number of crop groups active within the department. Their tasks include discussing developments relating to quality inspections, quality brands, crop protection and research.

The following crop groups are active:

  • Strawberries
  • Asparagus
  • Greenhouse vegetables
  • Soft fruit (Berries, Raspberry, Blackberry)
  • Cabbage
  • Leeks

The department also includes a working group Uniform plant reproduction material. This working group is the technical working group of greenhouse vegetables and develops initiatives designed to enhance the quality of plant reproduction material.
