Working field of Plantum NL
Since the Second World War, the Dutch agricultural
sector has gradually expanded to become one of the world leaders.
This has been made possible by exploiting the countries favourable
natural conditions and by investing large sums in research, information
campaigns and education. These days the trade in agricultural
products accounts for almost 20 % of the total value of the Netherlands’
exports.
Important push to the development of Dutch agriculture
was also given by research and development in plant breeding,
e.g. resistance to plant diseases, and improved propagation methods.
The Dutch industry of reproductive material has become of crucial
importance to the Dutch and international primary agriculture.
The Netherlands produces 9.2 billion euro worth
of vegetables, agricultural, and ornamental crops. Production
starts with seeds, cuttings and young plants that are produced
by the five hundred Dutch Plantum NL members. These companies
breed new varieties, propagate cuttings and young plants and trade
seeds and seed potatoes with a high quality. Some businesses can
be classed as world market leaders.
In the policy document of Plantum NL “In
Semente Messis; mission and priorities of Plantum NL”, Plantum
NL stated the interests of the sector. Important issues for the
industry are plant breeders rights, trade barriers, crop protection,
research, organic breeding.
